Thomas Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
A single omission did the trick. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to realize that winning the World Cup is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, although it is equally on the midfielder to blend into the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.
The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it in the right way. Individual quality is important but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when stardom takes over. Still, a point has been made.
The midfielder had much to ponder after not being selected of the recent team selection. He observed the national side book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel mention appreciating the squad's spirit and ethics. Naturally, he has responded in top form, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have made his squad place precarious.
The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on frightening rivals instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover for the youngster after showing that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German commented. “Jude possesses that aggression. You need a certain edge to reach the heights that he has. We all need to help him and build an environment where he can [have] this edge in matches and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, how about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 requiring support and direction. He has been absent for the national team since spring and has struggled to reach his best recently but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after his display in Manchester City’s win against the German side this week.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the various creators at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to pick another youngster once he overcomes a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's style in the process.
It seems unlikely the current manager repeating that if it harms the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clarity helps. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I have this idea about him for a long time. I think it fits his style best.”
Tuchel conceded there are occasions when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then clearly an issue exists, be it the position, the environment, it's unclear.
“I think he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a particular setup, to have a defined role. Believe he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel discussed Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and the other drilling in goals from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, he hinted at using the playmaker as a false 9 versus one opponent or Albania. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for trying new things.
At the same time, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. The connection is lacking.
“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to start against the upcoming opponents. The manager desires him onside but he will be observing him carefully. Leave self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an superior one.
