Larry Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, optimistic about the promise of the company, and eagerly await following their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The newly public messages revealed that the official communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it respected the economist's determination to depart.
"We value his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the governing body," OpenAI stated.
Congressional Action
This news comes after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would compel the US justice department to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will afterward head to the office of the White House for endorsement. Trump has said he intends to sign the measure, after modifying his position on the matter following objections from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related messages released by the Congressional committee days ago referenced numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The communications showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the academic to prominent international personalities.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were made available with the public, he stated he accepted "total ownership for my poor judgment to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to reestablish faith and fix relationships with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist held high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a professor there. When announcing his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in the capital where Summers was a researcher, verified that Summers was no longer associated with the organization.
Summers became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
